The mouse model of pleurisy is characterized by a significant enhancement of cell migration due to neutrophils 4 h after pleurisy induction. Forty-eight hours after pleurisy induction a significant increase in cell migration due to mononuclear cells occurs. The aim of this work was to analyze the effect of cyclosporin A (CsA) upon leukocyte migration and expression of adhesion molecules CD 11 a/CD 18 in the lung and spleen 4 h and 48 h after inflammation induction by carrageenan injection into the mouse pleural cavity. The results showed that CsA significantly decreased leukocyte influx and CD 18 expression in the lung and spleen at 4 h and 48 h of pleurisy (P < 0.01). CsA also inhibited CD1 la expression in the lung at 4 h and 48 h and in the spleen at 4 h of pleurisy (P < 0.01). The results support the evidence that in the mouse model of carrageenan-induced pleurisy CsA, at the studied doses, has important anti-inflammatory properties, acting primarily on leukocyte migration from the pleural cavity to the lung and spleen via inhibition of CD1 la and/or CD18 expression.
