Training-induced improvements in the performance of motor tasks are thought in part to be due to changes in spinal reflex circuits. Supportive evidence comes from studies where changes in the Hoffman reflex (H-refiex) are observed as a result of balance training. In this issue of Ada Physiologica, Taube et al., using a combination of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and peripheral nerve stimulation, attempt to extend these earlier findings by investigating whether excitability changes also take place at supraspinal levels.
