GM, POSCO partner on cathode material

Automaker General Motors (GM) and POSCO Chemical, a division of the South Korean steelmaker, plan to form a manufacturing joint venture for cathode active materials in North America. The two companies have not chosen an exact location for the facility but do expect it to open sometime in 2024. Cathode active material represents about 40pc of the cost of a battery cell, according to GM. These materials are the main component that dictates differences in chemical composition when building battery cell electrodes, according to battery material distributor Targay.
