In the last ten years, American companies have invested more than 1 dollar trillion in computers; installing systems to manage information and to put competitors at a significant loss. Many automation attempts, however, have been dismal nightmares, fraught with frustration and failure. Both managers and workers have become increasingly aware of the shortcomings of information technology projects, including time delays, unsuitable training, and little integration of systems with business objectives.
