Is Coursepack Copying Fair Use?

You have just agreed to teach a course in special librarianship at a nearby library school and there is no published up-to-date textbook available. What will you do? The solution for many teachers has been to create coursepacks that students purchaseeither in lieu of a textbook or in addition to the adopted text. Coursepacks normally contain copies of the readings that a faculty member assigns to a class; the coursepack usually contains photocopies of articles, book chapters and other short excerpts. They tend to be used especially in highly specialized courses and those in newer subject areas in which there is no published textbook. Coursepacks also are useful for courses in which textbooks are dated or in which there is rapid development. Often,journals are where the most recent information is published. Coursepacks have been used not only at the college and university level but also for high school courses.
