摘要

A third-party buyer of ships appears to be pitting shipping associations against each other as it lobbies to prevent an outright ban of beaching ships for demolition. GMS supports the Danish Ship Association (DSA)'s position that ship recycling choice should not be based on geography alone. In a thinly veiled criticism, it contrasts Denmark's stance with that of Norway, which is urging its members not to recycle ships at yards that employ 'beaching'. The DSA believes it is important that the market makes a distinction between yards which use beaching and comply with the Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) and those that do not, GMS notes. Company founder and CEO Dr Anil Sharma says: "Often these decisions are made on perceptions ratherthan reality. Simply throwing money does not make ship recycling green. On the contrary, it's likely to reward inefficiencies."
