From the earliest days of marine travel the flag of a ship provided an indication of the nationality of the vessel, the country under whose laws it operated, and its legal status. As international trade developed in the Middle Ages and as nations built navies to protect their own maritime interests, it became increasingly important in practical terms that other mariners could easily identify the state under which a ship was operating.
