Anglo investors approve demerger of South African thermal assets

Anglo American shareholders overwhelmingly approved the demerger of its South African thermal coal assets into a new company called Thungela Resources, which is expected to be listed on the Johannesburg and London stock exchanges on 7 June. Thungela will officially demerge from Anglo on 4 June, after shareholders voted for the move at Anglo’s annual general meeting this week. Led by CEO July Ndlovu, Thungela will become the top South African thermal coal exporter with mines that together sold around 16.5 mt overseas last year out of a total output of 28 mt. It will also be the largest shareholder in the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT), holding a 23.2% equity stake that entitles it to 19.8 mt/y of RBCT’s 91 mt/y export capacity.
