US low-vol coking coal rises further, China demand seen

London—Atlantic metallurgical coal markets on March 31 saw US low-volatile matter coking coal prices rise further on signs of longer-term demand at higher delivered prices in China compared with other markets. China trade for non-Australian coking coal imports remains a driver for spot markets, with a bifurcation in seaborne markets for buyers able to take advantage of lower Australian FOB prices. Tighter availability for Australian coals such as PCI, and strong steel raw materials demand in Europe and the US contributed to limit market availability, as new contracts renew and spot activity slowed.
