Atlantic met coal market rally intact

London—Atlantic coking coal markets on Jan. 19 saw price offers and trading terms well supported by higher overall steel prices and firmer commodity markets, with spot demand strong. Tight US met coal supplies and potential for US exports to China in the next few months is limiting large variations in offer terms from spot US met coal indices. Strong spot demand led to price differences within met coal qualities narrowing, with reference indices. Lower quality coals may be priced relatively higher, and Australian and other premium HCCs available under contract are keeping a lid on premiums.
