China’s iron and steel capacity expansion is likely to see a slowdown in 2021 as authorities crack down on violations of capacity swap rules, a move that could help cap the rise in China’s steel production in the long run, sources said on July 26. China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment, or MEE, recently announced violations of environmental protections and steel capacity swaps in eight provinces, and urged the local governments to submit rectification plans within 30 working days.
