Alberta Revives Taps' Legislation

Alberta's Conservative government is reviving legislation originally designed to "turn off the taps" if British Columbia tried to restrict the flow of oil and gas to the province - a concern sparked by BC's reluctance in 2019 to help expand the Trans Mountain oil pipeline. The C$12.6 billion (US$10.4 billion) Trans Mountain expansion would raise capacity on the system from 300,000 b/d to 890,000 b/d and is scheduled to open in December 2022. But like most oil and gas pipelines being built in North America its timetable has been pushed back again and again. For instance, Ottawa suspended construction until Aug. 20 to protect hummingbird nests (OD Apr.26'21).
