ANWR Sale Falls Flat

The Trump administration found few takers last week at its sale of drilling leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, with an Alaska state agency emerging as the sole bidder for most of the acreage. The weak results were sure to be a disappointment to Alaska's decades-long effort to open up gas and oil drilling and attract jobs to the cash-strapped state. The sale received 16 bids on 12 of the 22 tracts offered, with the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority the only taker for at least eight of the tracts. Those leases may effectively serve as placeholders in the event larger partners can be brought on board in the future.
