Iran Claims Sharp Increase in Product Exports

Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh says Iran has raised its refining capacity by nearly a quarter to 2.2 million barrels per day over the past eight years, while increasing its exports of petroleum products fourfold, despite crippling US sanctions. The sanctions apply to Iranian exports of refined products as well as crude oil. But the country’s ability to refine more of its own crude - it became self-sufficient in gasoline in 2019 - has helped cushion the blow of the US sanctions, which prohibit international trading of Iran’s oil.
