As many other crops, tomato is mainly hybrid in commercialized cultivars. Hybrid breeding requires breeding material with excellent traits. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is non-proteogenic amino acid with health-promoting functions. Although tomato fruits have a relatively high GABA content compared with other crops, levels must be further increased to effectively confer the health-promoting functions. Previously tomato 'Miro-Tom' mutants generated via CRISPR/Cas9 system targeting SIGAD3, which synthesis GABA in tomato fruits, exhibited highly increased GABA contents (TG3C37#21-7 and TG3C37#21-19). In this study, we evaluated the potential of the genome-edited tomato as a breeding material for producing high-GABA hybrid tomatoes.
