Guillain-Barre Syndrome and COVID-19: Causation or Coincidence

A retrospective national epidemiologic study, prospective cohort study, and genomic and proteomic homology analysis together do not support a causal association between COVID-19 and GBS. Initial reports from the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic suggested that Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) was associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection (NEJM JW Neurol Jul 2020 and N Engl J Med 2020; 382:2574). Researchers in the U.K. conducted three studies to investigate whether this association is causal or coincidental.
