Effect of Oryza perennis Male Sterile Cytoplasm on Yield and Components of Rice Hybrids

Sixteen rice hybrids (eight aF_1 and eight bF_1 rice hybrids) were evaluated to study the effect of Oryza perennis source of male sterile cytoplasm on grain yield and yield components. The study indicated that O. perennis exerted negative effects on panicle length, number of fertile spikelets per panicle, spikelet fertility per cent, harvest index and grain yield per plant, while positive effects were predominant on 50% flowering duration, plant height, ear bearing tillers per plant and 1000-grain weight. The negative effect of Oryza perennis cytoplasm was strong because of its sporophytic male sterility.
