Magnetic shaft position encoders are not that new; I encountered them quite a few years ago. However, my early efforts at using them were not successful. They needed diametrally polarized magnets which were not easy to source and my attempts with other magnets were not fruitful. Also, some of the early transducers were not very user friendly; however, the AS5040 from AMS is quite easy to use. As long as you have a suitable magnet (and mechanical apparatus to position and rotate the magnet), the sensor will produce results; quadrature encoder signals are produced by default. When I learned this I decided an encoder for a servo motor was a project I had to do.
