The comments section under an article about safety footwear, a hardy perennial for many safety managers, has been busy again. Omar Khalid posted a helpful response to a reader who wondered whether his son, a student at a university technical college (UTC) with workshop based teaching, should be provided with free safety boots. Pointing out that section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act requires employers to ensure that "persons not in their employment but who may be affected by the work are not exposed to risks to their health and safety" Khalid argued that the UTC should hold a stock of hard hats, hi-vis jackets, disposable overalls and indeed boots for the use of visitors and students.
