Q: Should pump systems require a pressure relief valve? For rotodynamic pump systems pressure relief valves may not be a requirement because these types of pumps have a maximum shut off pressure they can achieved. However, most positive displacement pumps have no limit on the pressure they will pump against. This can result in the positive displacement pump system developing pressure greater than the system's design limit when flow is restricted.
