Preparedness & Response during Disasters in Power Transmission & Distribution Systems

Electricity is the lifeline of the economy as well as of the society. Huge quantity of distribution line, cables, electrical equipment, workers and general public are involved in the system; Power supply is the major input for the social and economicwelfare of the society of any country. Any disruption in the supply of electricity causes not only loss to the economy, but also creates hardship to human beings, as every aspect of human life is connected with electricity.India is vulnerable, in varying degrees to a large number of natural as well as man-made disasters. 38.6% of its land mass is prone to earthquake of moderate to high intensity, over 12% of land is prone to floods and river erosion. The Power sector, which is one of the major critical infrastructures, gets affected due to any kind of disaster and thus leads to disruption in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity.
