Lane reservations suggested to ease holiday traffic

One radical idea to help smooth traffic on the approach to popular holiday hotspots is to reserve one lane of a motorway for those who book in advance. University of Leeds' visiting research fellow Dr Sally Cairns suggested that the measure could be trialled on the M5 heading down to the South West during busy periods. "Maybe Highways England could do some kind of pilot about how we allocate road space on these routes," she told the TP discussion.
