Hebei Iron & Steel commissions new 2.4 million mt/year Laoting furnace

China's Hebei Iron & Steel, or Hegang, commissioned the first blast furnace at its greenfield integrated Laoting steelworks Sept. 7 after subsidiary Tangshan Iron & Steel, or Tanggang, had permanently shut down its iron and steelmaking facilities by the end of August, Shenzhen-listed Hegang announced Sept. 9. Some market sources said the Laoting steelworks, also known as Hebei Laoting Iron & Steel, was unlikely to commission all of its iron and steelmaking facilities and rolling mills in 2020. Coupled with Tanggang's shutdown, this would result in a net output loss from September, adversely impacting both flat and long steel production.
