ImF upgrades 2021 global growth outlook

The IMF is taking a more optimistic view on the projected rebound in global economic growth and commodity demand this year, as countries expand their vaccination eforts in the fght against Covid-19. The global economy will grow by 5.5pc in 2021, the IMF says in its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO). This is 0.3 percentage points higher than in its previous outlook, released in October. The IMF expects global growth to continue at 4.2pc next year. The world economy shrank by 3.5pc last year, a less severe contraction than the 4.4pc decline the IMF had projected in October (see table). China and the US will emerge from the pandemic-related decline in a better position than other countries, according to IMF projections, with both economies only around 1.5pc smaller in 2022 than in pre-pandemic forecasts. By comparison, the Middle East and central Asia region, along with Latin America, will have economies 6-7pc smaller next year than they would have been without Covid-19.
