Utilization of Solid Rejects in Steel Plant

Coal has been the main source of energy in India and through increased coal production. Coal is still fulfilling the energy demands of the country. The quality of coal has always remained a matter of concern-presently being improved through regulatory mechanisms and technological initiatives.Coal production in the coimtry is dominated by non-coking coal as coking coal reserves in the country are limited. High production of non-coking coal is also due to demand from the power and steel sector. In the steel sector while making of steel through DRI-EAF route are consuming huge amount of low ash non-cocking coal. This low ash coal coming from coal washing, technically called coal beneficia-tion, is a process by which the quality of raw coal is improved by either reducing the extraneous matter that gets extracted along with the mined coal or the associated ash. Beneficiation of coal generated about 20- 25% of rejects having ash of about 60% and above. This washery rejects and char (DRI Klin rejects) are two main solid wastages of steel plant and can be utilized in power generationwith/wifhout blending of raw coal.
