Evaluation of Indigenous Fungal Strains for Biodegradation of Textile Dyes

The present investigation was undertaken to isolate and evaluate the decolourization potential of fungal strains for textile dyes such as Brown ME2RL, Blue MEBL, Orange M2R and Red RB. Out of five fungal isolates, four were identified and characterized based on their cultural characteristics and microscopic analysis; rest one strain was not identified owing to the lack of sporulating structures and designated as mycelia sterilia. Effluent samples were also characterized for physiochemical properties. Decolourization efficacies of identified native fungal strains were carried out under in vitro condition both in solid and liquid culture mediums with 200 mg/l of each dye. It was observed that Alternaria brassicola, Alternaria sp., Aspergillus candida and A. niger were efficient in degrading the textile dyes. The study also depicted that Aspergillus niger showed highest decolourization for Red RB (93.16 +/- 0.08%), Blue MEBL (80.99 +/- 0.30%) and Orange M2R (82.29 +/- 0.19%); Alternaria brassicola showed maximum decolourization for Brown ME2RL (89.73 +/- 0.08%). The decolourization was due to degradation of dye, as the biomass produced was white-clear. This study reinforces the potential of indigenous fungi for the decolourization of textile effluents.
