Preliminary survey of some wetlands with special reference to Sarus Crane Grus antigone antigone population and its habitat condition

The main objective of the study was to determine current population and status to assess habitat conditions of the Sarus Crane Grus antigone antigone in two districts of Uttar Pradesh. The preliminary survey was done in six natural wetlands of Mainpuri and Etawah districts. More than 1,000 Sarus Cranes were observed in Sarang Nagla, Bhawat, Sauj, Saman Bird Sanctuary and Sarsai Nawar wetlands. In the sixth wetland (Ambarpur) the number of Sarus Cranes was nil due to the dry condition of wetland. Thepressure of domestic pigs in wetlands creates major problems as the pigs feed in the same feeding ground as the Sarus Crane, resulting in the pigs dominating. This adversely affects the Sarus Crane population. The present survey also indicates that someproblems are arising between farmers and wetlands i.e., fishing, drainage of wetland etc.
