摘要

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 15% of the United States population suffers from chronic kidney disease. A majority of adults (9 out of 10) are unaware they have chronic kidney disease, which is the precursor to renal failure, also known as end-stage renal disease. Two out of every 1000 people who have end-stage renal failure are on dialysis or have received a kidney transplant. Dialysis treatment is time consuming, requiring several hours a week, and restricts patients' diet and fluid intake. The advantage of kidney transplants includes eliminating the need for dialysis and reducing the long-term health problems that often affect patients on dialysis. Risks are consistent with any surgical procedure, including bleeding, infection, and organ rejection, but 1 unique disadvantage is finding a suitable kidney donor. This article serves as a how-to guide for assessing healthy living donors to determine their qualifications for renal transplant.
