Leading Edge Aluminum Welding Technologies Essential to NASA's Mission

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) has been instrumental in the success of U.S. manned space flight programs, from the Saturn launch vehicles for the Apollo moon program to the Space Shuttle propulsion systems and the current Space Launch System (SLS). The foundation of MSFC's Advanced Welding and Manufacturing Facility is located in Building 4755, where some of the most sophisticated friction stir welding (FSW) tools in the world are used to fabricate the most powerful and complex rocket systems ever built in this long running space program's history. The SLS will propel the Orion space capsule with up to four astronauts first to the Moon and then to Mars, deep space, and beyond.
