Rigorously Rethinking Data

We consider how the act of rethinking data needs to be properly supported by a rigorous taxonomy of the various actors that operate digital platforms that transact with citizens. The strategies, missions and raisons d'etre of such actors vary widely. We suggest that citizens have a reasonable understanding that they are trading data concerning their behaviour and lifestyle in return for any direct benefits that they receive. New narratives are necessary so that citizens can perceive whether such trades are equitable (even qualitatively) and so that they can make better informed decisions about their participation (whether voluntary or not).
