Aframax tankers more attractive than Handysize

Charterers favoured 80,000-120,000t Aframax tankers rather than smaller 15,000- 35,000t Handysize vessels for Baltic dirty product exports in March-June because of more-favourable freight rates, market participants say. “Strong demand for Handysize tankers in March-April boosted freight rates for this type of vessel. Spot Aframax rates fell sharply in April as a result, making larger cargo shipments by Aframax more economical,” one shipbroker says.
