Cenace spearheads power balancing market

Mexican grid operator Cenace has carried out its first annual balancing auction, aimed at ensuring the country has sufficient supply to cover demand spikes. Independent power producers, state-owned utility CFE and private-sector qualified generators are required to secure enough standby capacity to cover anticipated demand, while the price paid for the capacity provides an additional revenue stream for generators to cover power stations’ fixed costs.
