Although the concept behind implant-based breast augmentation today remains unchanged from when the procedure was first performed approximately 70 years ago, advancements in implant technology and surgical technique have evolved breast augmentation into a procedure that today no longer resembles those early efforts. Despite the popularity of breast augmentation, however, the craft has not yet been perfected; searching for ways to improve outcomes and minimize risk for patients continues. There is no doubt that the techniques and technologies discussed in this article will play a role in breast augmentation in the years to come, but only time will tell whether these innovations become fundamental pillars of the procedure or are lost to the annals of history.
