US EPA to resume IRIS review of formaldehyde: Stakeholders divided over hazard assessment’s value amid ongoing TSCA evaluation

The US EPA is planning to resume its Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessment of formaldehyde, the acting head of the EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) has said in a memo to programme leaders and regional administrators. The development could reignite a decade-long row about the effectiveness of the IRIS programme and its hazard assessment of formaldehyde, even as the substance undergoes a separate TSCA risk evaluation (see box).
