India’s government has extended the period for toy manufacturers to carry out mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification by four months. However, its ban on the import of sub-standard toys remains in effect. "This decision allows domestic manufacturers four months’ extra time to make necessary arrangements for compliance of standards in view of difficulties arising out of the pandemic," a spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce said, adding that the extension would also provide a window for domestic toy manufacturers to get rid of existing stock.
