Tokyo—Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry launched a series of oil policy discussions on Tuesday, which will look at possible new regulations to improve local refiners’ productivity. METI intends to complete a report on the policy discussions by the end of June, and the report will be used as the basis for Japan’s oil policy going forward, a METI official said. In a series of meetings with academics, industry experts and observers, METI’s oil and natural gas subcommittee will discuss how refiners can make their core businesses “sustainable” given the country’s diminishing domestic oil demand, the official said.
