PKN Orlen may shutter Lithuanian refinery

Warsaw—Poland’s largest refiner, PKN Orlen, said Wednesday it may temporarily close its loss-making Lithuanian refinery if the macroeconomic environment in the Baltic country continues to worsen. The company saw crude oil throughput at its Polish, Lithuanian and Czech refineries fall 3% year on year in the second quarter of 2014 to 6.48 million mt. The reduced throughput was due to planned maintenance at its main Plock refinery in Poland and difficult refining conditions at the Mazeikiu refinery in Lithuania — branded as Orlen Lietuva — which has seen its traditional export market in the US and Europe shrink amid rising transport costs.
