Albania tends not to figure in discussionsof Europe’s upstream industry — but theBalkan country is in fact home to what couldbe the continent’s largest onshore oil field,now in the sights of Canadian independentBankers Petroleum.The Patos-Marinza field contains morethan 7.5 billion barrels of original oil inplace. Much is heavy oil with an API gravityof 9°-12°, housed in 22 discrete sandstonesvertically stacked down to roughly 6,000 feetbeneath the surface.
