摘要

A 20-day state of emergency has been declared in the Kazakh oil city of Zhanaozen as the authorities seek to contain escalating unrest in the Central Asian country following clashes on Friday that latest official figures say left at least 14 people dead (IOD Dec.19’11). In a statement on Monday, Kazakhstan’s prosecutor-general said the situation in Zhanaozen, in the far southwest of the country, was “gradually returning to normal,” with no crimes or breaches of a newly imposed nighttime curfew occurring on Sunday evening.
