Wintershall Drills Offshore Abu Dhabi

Germany's Wintershall is moving ahead with an appraisal program at Abu Dhabi's partly offshore Shuwaihat sour gas field, which could hold up to 3 Tcf (85 Bcm) of gas, according to initial estimates that have yet to be confirmed. Wintershall, a wholly owned subsidiary of chemical giant BASF, spudded the onshore Shuwaihat-6 well, which will take around eight months to drill, on Nov. 2, Wintershall Chairman Mario Mehren said in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. The firm completed its first appraisal well, the offshore Shuwaihat-5, in 2015.
