Global coal demand will likely rebound in 2040-50, as global industrial thermal and coking coal consumption and power demand from non-OECD countries in Asia, excluding China, are projected to increase, according to the EIA’s International Energy Outlook 2019 report. EIA forecasts coal consumption will decrease until the 2030s amid increasing competition from natural gas and efforts to reduce emissions. Coal burn will fall by 2.5pc annually in 2018-25 in OECD countries.
