US railed coal falls to lowest level in 2020

US rail coal car loadings last week reached their lowest level this year as the effects of Covid-19 control measures, low natural gas prices and power plant retirements trimmed demand. US railroads loaded 45,756 cars with coal during the week ended on 15 May, down by 44pc compared with the year-earlier period, Association of American Railroads (AAR) data show. Volumes were also down by 35pc compared with the busiest week this year, when 70,831 coal cars were loaded during the week ended on 11 January.
