Cuprous oxide was developed as an agricultural fungicide in 1932, and relies on a simple inorganic particle (the cuprous ion) for its action. In spite of fierce competition from an increasing arsenal of new organic fungicide chemistry, it remains oneof the most valuable and widely used fungicides. Cuprous oxide in horticulture is noted for its efficacy and versatility on a wide range of tree crops, including high value ones such as stone fruit (cherries, plums, peaches, apricots and nectarines) andnuts (walnuts, pecans and almonds).
