The effect of the GATT agreement on the import regulations of the European Union Consequences for exports from the developing countries

The Uruguay Round GATT agreements came into force at the start of 1995, In the agricultural sector they are concerned above all with the areas of market access, internal supports and limitation of subsidized exports. Over and above this, they are concerned with sanitary and phytosanitary import regulations. This paper attempts to outline these GATT agreements and examine their relevance for fresh fruit and vegetable imports into the European Union (EU). The effect of the GATT agreements on the importation of fresh fruit and vegetables into the European Union (EU) has, of course, also resulted in numerous changes for exports from developing countries to the Common Market.
