Yield and nut characteristics of 'Tombul' hazelnut growing at different elevations and in different orientations

This study compared nut yield and nut characteristics of 'Tombul' hazelnut growing at different elevations (low: 40 m, middle: 320 m, high: 650 m) and orientations (facing north or south). Nuts were harvested and evaluated from three orchards for eachcombination of elevation and orientation. The results showed differences associated with elevation and orientation. The number of nuts per cluster (3.12), protein content (14.49%) and yield per plant (512.34 g) were higher in the North-facing than in the South-facing orchards. The highest number of nuts per cluster was 3.26 at high elevation. Nut weight, kernel weight and kernel size were highest at low elevation. No differences were seen for nut size, nut shape index, and yield per trunk cross-sectional area.
