Ammonium nitrate the cause of massive explosion in Beirut

Ammonium nitrate (AN) stored in a port warehouse is the main cause of the massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday that killed at least 110 people, injured more than 4,000, and caused severe damage to buildings. Lebanese prime minister Hassan Diab says that 2,750 metric tons of AN had been stored for six years at the warehouse “without safety measures,” which he has called “unacceptable.” Port ofcials have been put under house arrest pending an investigation, reports say.
