Saudi Aramco, likely the company with the most aggressive worldwide growth ambitions in petrochemicals, is expected to complete development work to commercialize its breakthrough thermal crude oil–to–chemicals (COTC) technology by next year with a world-scale plant based on the process to be ready by about the middle of the decade, says Ahmad al-Khowaiter, chief technology ofcer. He was responding to CW’s question at a packed IHS Markit masterclass session, COTC: An industry game changer? held on Tuesday at the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemical Association (GPCA) Annual Forum, currently taking place in Dubai. The thermal COTC process is being developed jointly by Aramco, McDermott, and Chevron Lummus Global (CLG).
