A.F. Kazzaz et al have given a very comprehensive review of this subject, running to 57 pages and having 263 references, covering a host of reactions to produce potentially useful materials. [This column has covered fairly extensively a variety of value-added products from L which is a versatile starting renewable material which is abundant and constitutes between 15 to20wt%of lignocellulosic biomass]. Different types of plants like softwood, hardwood, and non-wood are considered where L has different amounts. For instances hardwood L contains the highest amount of syringyl alcohol. L can be isolated from the spent pulping liquors of sulphite, kraft, and soda processes.
