Recent months have seen governments gathering to negotiate a cruel deal. Even as you read this article, whalers are lining up their harpoons and killing whales at sea in what is a cruel and inhumane act. Many hundreds of whales are destined to die this year. There are real fears that the global ban on commercial whaling, which came into force in 1986, is under attack as never before. The Whalewatch coalition, coordinated by WSPA, has already scored a significant victory, with cruelty brought back tothe whaling debate at the 2004 annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC). Countries reached international agreement on the need to address the inherent cruelty of whaling and voted in favour of a Resolution calling for action to stopthe suffering involved in modern daywhaling activities.
