Overcrowded conditions often cause bears, which are solitary by nature, to fight each other. With nowhere for less dominant bears to retreat to, many endure wounds more severe than they would receive in the wild. Some go without adequate food, too fearful to claim their share. There is little protection from harsh weather conditions and often nowhere to hide from view. Hard concrete flooring prevents the bears from foraging and contributes to health and hygiene problems. A complete lack of enrichment causes the bears to show pointless and repetitive behaviours, visible symptoms of severe stress.
